I've inserted patched builds in the past and I'll start again until toad (or whoever can release freenet builds in the future) comes up with a reasonable build himself.
The patch modifies congestion control of build 1405 which forced everybody to use AIMD=true. Though this patched version might not be quite as fast as previous versions without AIMD I think it works better:
- Less backoff, stable and higher number of connected peers
- Routing missdistances are much smaller and stable which is probably important for inserts
- better success rates by HTL

The patch to source of original freenet build 1405 below contains two parts
- (not so important) a fix for broken CompatibilityMode FCP message where toad seems not to care about
- a patch for congestion control in RequestStarter.java

To run the binary rename it to freenet.jar after download, shutdown your node, copy the patched binary over the original one (maybe after keeping a backup somewhere) and start your node again.
